Electricity Bill in Switzerland: on how to save

Today is Sunday and although I was exhausted from yesterday trip, I still managed to wake up quite early.

The sun was already up. I did 3 loads of washing last night and I purposely did not use the dryer because I wanted to hang them up and use the sun’s energy. After finishing with this chore, I then did the ironing from last week’s washing.

I have been paying careful attention to our electricity bill.

In Switzerland, there is a high and low rate when it comes to electricity.

High Tariff: 5.90 rappen per kilowatt

Weekdays 0700 – 20:00

Saturdays: 0700 – 13:00

Low Tariff: 4.95 rappen per kilowatt (an increase of .15 rappen from last year)

Weekdays 20:00 – 0700

Saturdays: from 13:00

Sundays : whole time to 06:00 the next day

So what I do is I make all the washing, ironing, dishwashing and even charging phones and laptops on the low tariff schedule. It is not really a difficult thing to do. This makes me not waste unnecessary money because I can actually manage to do this lifestyle.

Of course this would be difficult for a big family or when one or both partners work during night time.

Following this simple saving scheme is worth it for me. Here is a real life example:

  1. An hour of ironing costs 6.49 on a high tariff but just 5.44 on a low tariff. Today I was ironing for 2 hours, multiply that 5 times in a month is already 10 chf worth of saving. This is if I just iron for 10 hours in a month.

  1. A 3 hour use of washing machine on a high tariff is 10.40 chf while it is 7.40 on a low tariff. That is a 3 chf difference per 3 hours. We are just two in our family so I typically wash more or less 5 times per month, 2 loads 1.50 hours per load.

Then there is the dishwasher, the fridge, the freezer, TV, computer and phones, etc. Of course, one cannot control every appliance for we do not really plug and umplug the fridge for example. However, I think being aware of the things that we can control already makes a big difference.

I hate to waste money and resources especially if they are unnecessary. So I make a conscious effort to pay attention to little things.

From July to December of 2018, I spent 365 kilowatt on high tariff down from 592 kilowatt from the 2017 same months period.

It meant that I did less things and activities during the high tariff. So naturally my low tariff usage was up.

During the the same period July to December 2018 , I had 631 kilowatt usage but that was only 546 kilowatt from same period year 2017.

The reason was mainly that I became aware of the tariffs around this time. Prior to this, I just did things normally without any considerations.

And it was worth it, I pay less bill on electricity so it we can use the money in another way.
